GLAZES ARE COOLED MOLTEN MINERALS OR ORGANICPRODUCTSTHATOBTAINED DURING HARDENING AND RIGIDIFY WITHOUTCRYSTALLIZATION.THE COMPOSITIONS WERE FORMULATED USING THE SEGER METHOD AND PREPARED BY CONVENTIONAL CERAMIC PROCESSING [2]. UNDERSTANDING AND PREDICTING THE PROPERTIES AND BEHAVIOR OF GLAZES, AND THE EFFECT OF ADDITIVES CAN BE AIDED BY A KNOWLEDGE OF THE ATOMIC-SCALE STRUCTURE OF SUCH MATERIALS. MANY OF THE GLAZE PROPERTIES SUCH AS VISCOSITY, THERMAL EXPANSION COEFFICIENT, OPTICAL AND MECHANICAL VALUES ARE INTIMATELY RELATED TO THE GLAZE COMPOSITION SINCE THE OVERALL STRUCTURES RESULTS FROM THE CONTRIBUTION AND INTERACTION OF EACH CONSTRUCTIONAL OXIDES [3].DUE TO XRAY DIFFRACTION RESIDUAL STRESS MEASUREMENT, THE STRAIN IN THE CRYSTAL LATTICE CAN MEASURED; AND THE RESIDUAL STRESS PRODUCING THE STRAIN IS CALCULATED, ASSUMING A LINEAR ELASTIC DISTORTION OF THE CRYSTAL LATTICE. ALTHOUGH THE TERM STRESS MEASUREMENT HAS COME INTO COMMON USAGE, STRESS IS AN EXTRINSIC PROPERTY THAT IS NOT DIRECTLY MEASURABLE. ALL METHODS OF STRESS DETERMINATION REQUIRE MEASUREMENT OF SOME INTRINSIC PROPERTY, SUCH AS STRAIN OR FORCE AND AREA, AND THE CALCULATION OF THE ASSOCIATED STRESS [4]. OUR EXPERIMENTS SHOW THAT GLAZE CAN BE AGED BY STRAIN DETERMINATIONS, DUE TO XRD PATTERNING.
